Samuel Langhorne Clemens, more famously known as Mark Twain, is a world-renown American author who wrote some of the best novels in history. Twain was born in Florida, Missouri on November 30, 1835 to John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemens. He was the sixth child of these two parents. When he was four-years-old, the family moved 35 miles to Hannibal, which is where Twain grew up. He attended a private school in Hannibal at the age of nine after he was able to go outside and be with other kids because of his poor health. When he was at the age of eleven or twelve, his father died of pneumonia. Growing up, he was always very interested in writing which is why he got a printing job in St. Louis.
Mark Twain was originally known as a humorist in some of his early work, but then became someone who gave an accurate remembrance for Mississippi frontier life through two of his novels titled The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1976) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1984). His first best-selling novel was known as "HolyLand" that published in 1869. Twain published over thirty book during the time of his career. Nearly all of his books are roughly based on past experiences of his own life and even some characters are incorporated into the books as well. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was also ranked as the fifth most frequently challenged book in the U.S. by the American Library Association. His writing name "Mark Twain" comes from when he was a river pilot in 1858. It is a river term which means twelve feet when the depth of water for a boat is being sounded, in which "Mark Twain" means that is safe to navigate. The first time Mark was recognized for his work it was when "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County" was published in the New York Saturday Press on November 18, 1865.
Later on in his life, Twain married Olivia Langdon and had four children. One of the children died as an infant, two other died in their twenties, and Clara lived to be 88. Clara had a daughter, but the daughter died without having any kids of her own. There are no longer any descendants of the great Samuel Langhorne Clemens. As for Twain, he died on April 21, 1910 in Redding, Connecticut and was buried in Woodland Cemetery in Elmira, New York. It was quite an interesting thing that Twain was born when Haley's Comet was visible and died also when the comet was visible.
