As he watches the scorpion move slowly down the rope, Kino hears Songs of Evil come into his mind. Then, Songs of the Enemy roar in his ears after killing the scorpion.

After discovering "the greatest pearl in the world", some of the things Kino wants are to get married, new clothing for his family, his son to be treated by the doctor, a rifle, education, and to start a new life.

Some similarities between Kino and Juana include the yearn to grow out of poverty, their sense of family, their both Native American, and they're both poor. Their attitudes toward the pearl differ because Kino thinks that the pearl will bring great wealth to their family, but Juana is apprehensive about the pearl because she thinks that it will bring bad luck to their family.

Kino responds in a very understandable way because he hits the door when finding out the doctor won't take care of his newborn son.

What qualities are revealed through their responses? Why does Kino become "every man's enemy" after he discovers the great pearl? The pearl affects the priest because now the priest wants Kino to share the wealth with the church, but before he didn't really care about Kino. The pearl affects the shopkeepers because they were suddenly interested because they knew Kino would buy clothing items from them. The pearl affects he doctor because he finally cares about Coyotito because now he will get commissioned for treating the baby. The pearl affects the beggars because they're thinking now there's a poor man who became a rich man and he will give alms. The pearl affects the pearl buyers because they're competing for the pearl to give Kino the best price for the pearl. The qualities that are revealed through their responses show that the value of money can really change someone.

When Kino hears the Song of Evil between the doctor's visit, he fears the doctor may have made Coyotito even more sick than he already was. Kino's ignorance places him at the mercy of the doctor because he just wants his son to get better and remain alive.

The pearl has brought evil to Kino and Juana because now everyone is after it.

In Chapter 3 when the narrator says, "...it is sad that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more", I agree because with humans one gadget is never enough. An example of something today's generation is taken over by... Technology. iPhones and iPads keep improving as the weeks go by, but instead of just sticking with what they have they NEED the better gadget. People purchase the iPhone 5 which came out last year, but for some people it isn't enough. Many went to go buy the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C that came out around the same time because they felt that the better camera or different background/color is necessary to have.
